Camps for kids entering 5th and 6th grade use Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math to delve deep into a topic of scientific importance.

Camp sessions run Monday - Thursday

Time: 9 am - Noon (before-care option available starting at 7:45 am);  Afternoon Camps 1-4 pm

A full day option is available for several camps by pairing a Discovery Center morning camp with an afternoon camp with Discovery Center, Rockford Art Museum (located in the same building with us) or Burpee Museum of Natural History (located next door).

Fees: $90 public / $80 members per morning or afternoon camps. Rockford Art Museum and Burpee camps are the same prices, but paid for separately.

No discount for partial attendance. Before-care option is an extra $5/day for each child.

Cancellation policy: Refunds are available through the close of registration, minus 10%. Discovery Center reserves the right to cancel events; in which case, a full refund will be issued.

Snacks: You are welcome to send a snack.

Lunch: For full day camps, bring a snack, lunch and a drink.

June 18-21

Our week-long camp is filled with all of the BAM! POW! & BOOM! Comic Superheroes dream of! Exercise your superhuman abilities with an array of challenges focused on Marvel, DC, and more! Use inspiration from our exhibits and hands-on experiments and combine drawing and storytelling to create handmade comics and zines. Work with a professional artist to learn comic fundamentals and build creative content.

Art Through Exploration
Get a little messy and a lot creative in this week of hands-on creativity! Using materials from paint to clay to fiber and more, campers are sure to have a great time while learning about art in its many forms.

Zombie Apocalypse

June 25-28

What would you do if there was an infectious outbreak...that resulted in zombies? Get prepared for an invasion while you study the biology of disease, build a biocontainment suit, and practice disaster preparedness. Immerse yourself in pop culture myths about zombies while practicing survival skills, and of course, investigating and studying BRAAAAAAAIIINNS! Then focus on prevention by learning how scientists control the spread of disease and stop pandemics.

Delightfully Deadly Dinosaurs
Giant teeth, sharp claws, and strong tails are ready for you to examine, hold and explore as we learn all about dinosaurs! Peek into our PaleoLab “behind the scenes” at Burpee for a live view of what our scientists are discovering. Learn how paleontologists go from digging dino bones to a assembling fully mounted skeleton like Jane. You will step into the world of Jane and Homer in the late Cretaceous, as well as explore micro-raptors. Come dressed for a dig as you step into the shoes of a real paleontologist!Indiana Jones & the Science Park of Doom.

Indiana Jones & the Science Park of Doom

July 9-12

Grab your fedora and bullwhip and come along on an archaeological adventure! Get down and dirty to unearth ancient artifacts, test your map making skills, and search for buried treasure. Dress for mess in this session that uses the tools and techniques of Indiana Jones and other professional seekers of what has been left behind for us to find!

Robotic Adventures

TOP SECRET! Team up to program your secret agent sidekick—a MINDSTORMS® EV3 robot—to help you tackle challenges you’ll face throughout your weeklong mission. Develop digital literacy skills while designing and programming your robot to maneuver mysterious mazes, crack cryptic codes and collect enigmatic clues. Are you ready, recruits? This message will self-destruct in 3, 2, 1...



July 16-19

Are you stronger than friction? What does it take to defy gravity? Use curiosity, ingenuity, science, and math to test myth-conceptions and separate fact from fiction.


Hogwarts Summer School

July 23-26

Grab your Nimbus 2000 and fly to Discovery Center Museum for a week at Hogwarts! Be sorted into a house, practice your potions skills, discover magical creatures and learn to play Quidditch. Costumes are encouraged but not required for this romp through science and imagination.

Water Wonders
Dive into the wonders of underwater ecosystems! From rivers to ponds to oceans, you become a scientist studying what lurks below the surface. On the banks of the Rock River, our AquaAerobics Water lab allows you to be hands-on with real water testing, examine live wild animals, and learn about the health of our local waterways. Put your gloves on (or not) and spend time dissecting creatures of the world's H2O. Spend time with our aqua life touch tanks and feel the differences between creepy crawlies of all shapes and sizes! You won’t want to miss this hydro-excitement!

Rocket Science

July 30-August 2

No really, it IS rocket science! Summer is a BLAST as you design, build and operate a solid fuel rocket that meets both need and speed. Work with a team to explore persistent, “What if?” questions. This is your chance to engineer the future as you gear-up and apply imagination to the exciting realm of flight and aeronautics!

Art Around the World

Take a trip around the world and through history! Campers will learn about the art of different cultures and create their own versions of some of the world’s most remarkable artistic traditions.
