Family Classes

Moms and dads and grandparents, spend some fun learning time with your youngsters!  One adult required for every 3 children.  Ages and fees vary by topic.

Pre-registration is required.  To register, call (815) 963-6769 or stop by the Discovery Center Museum office during normal business hours.  Payment must accompany registration. Registration begins December 19 for members, December 21 for public.  Registration closes at 4:00 pm Friday of the week before each class.

Robo-A-Go-Go!

Sunday, February 12; 3:00pm – 5:00pm

Recommended for ages 6 and up.

Team up with family members to create your own original crazy robots!  We’ll supply tons of parts and tools; you bring the creativity and hard work!  Build robots that draw, zoom across the floor, and more in this open-ended, hands-on experiment in mechanical mayhem!

First child plus adult: $12 Members / $15 Public. Each additional child: $6 Members / $8 Public. Additional adults no charge

 

D’Egg-orating 

Saturday, April 7; 1:30-3:00 p.m.

Recommended for ages 4 and up

Find out how easy it is to create beautiful Easter Eggs!  Enjoy an egg-cellent snack as you experiment with several techniques including iridescence, stained glass, applique and more. Take all the fun and the beautiful eggs; leave the prep work and mess with us!  We supply one dozen hard boiled eggs plus dyes and materials for each child.  Bring your own additional eggs if you choose. 

One child plus adult: $12 Members / $15 Public. Each additional child: $3 Members / $5 Public. Additional adults no charge.

 

Robot Rendezvous

Session 1: Wednesday, March 7; 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Session 2: Wednesday, March 7; 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

Session 3: Sunday, April 15; 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Recommended for ages 5 and up

Learn together and explore binary code, create robots that can color, put together robot parts and test for metal fatigue.  In addition to class, plan to stay and visit our latest traveling exhibit “Robots: The Interactive Exhibition” and explore the rest of the museum. Fees include a one-hour classroom experience, admission to Robots, and regular museum admission. First child plus adult: $7 Members / $17 Public. Each additional child $5 Members / $10 Public. Additional adults: $2 Members / $7 Public

 

Chemistry with Mom

Sunday, May 13; 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Recommended for ages 6 and up

Explore the chemistry hiding in your cabinets and fridge!  Go way beyond baking soda and vinegar as you find spices that change colors, turn fruit and vegetables into secret message media, concoct your own foaming bath salts (a make-and-take Mothers Day gift in case you forgot?) and more! Dads are also welcome.

First child plus adult: $10 Members / $12 Public. Each additional child: $4 Members / $6 Public. Additional adults no charge.
